We do not turn this into a universal privacy or speed ranking. Both are affiliate partners, and this comparison uses published documentation and practical decision analysis. We have not audited their infrastructure or run a controlled speed test.

Original calculations by HostingRanker, using the dated source observations in the table. A lower bar does not establish the best product or comparable features.

We allocate the first payment across all months it covers, including any bonus months. Cash includes whole billing periods needed to reach the chosen horizon. Renewal rates are held constant for this illustration; they are not guaranteed future quotes. Unknown bills remain unverified. Domains, optional services and taxes are excluded unless explicitly added. Read the calculation method.

Use the interactive calculator to change the horizon, and check the full reviews for the requirements that could disqualify either option.

When Proton Free is enough to start

If you need a VPN on one device for general use and do not require control over a particular premium server location, Proton Free provides a route to evaluate the core application without a data cap.

Free is not identical to Plus. Its simultaneous-device allowance and server-selection model differ, and premium functions should not be assumed to be available. Verify the current plan details before relying on a specific use case.

This makes the initial decision straightforward: identify whether a real limitation prevents the task. If not, keep evaluating Free. If it does, compare the suitable paid plan with NordVPN rather than treating payment itself as a sign of better fit.

A free plan is also different from a paid plan with a refund guarantee. The latter requires payment and a valid refund request under the applicable terms.

For paid use, compare your actual devices

The checked documentation gives both NordVPN and Proton Plus a ten-device simultaneous allowance. The number alone is therefore unlikely to settle a typical paid comparison.

List operating systems and important behaviors: laptop sleep, phone network changes, a television app, router installation, split tunneling or startup blocking. Open the current platform guidance for each finalist and confirm support.

Test the same routine in both. A feature available on Windows may differ on macOS, Android or iOS. A browser extension may protect a narrower traffic scope than the full app.

If more than ten devices will regularly be active, compare the actual account conditions or examine PIA’s device allowance. Do not assume a consumer plan provides business user administration just because it supports many devices.

Privacy evidence: compare scope rather than slogans

Both providers publish privacy and technical information. Read the current policies, identify the operating entity and examine any audit references that are relevant to your concern.

Ask what was assessed, when, on which system or app version and with what limitations. A statement about application source code is different from evidence about production logging controls. Neither is an unlimited promise about future operation.

HostingRanker has not independently reproduced those assessments. Our role here is to explain the decision and make the evidence boundary visible, not to certify either service.

For either provider, a logged-in website can still recognize your account. A VPN does not fix a compromised device or remove every tracking mechanism. Read what a VPN protects before deciding which privacy claim matters.

Compare the exact subscription and avoid duplicated bundles

Choose a VPN tier from your needs before comparing ecosystem bundles. Extra storage, password tools or security functions can be useful, but only if you will use them and they work on your platforms.

Write down the total first payment, months included, renewal amount and currency. Promotions can vary by country and time. A low monthly equivalent may represent a long commitment, and extra introductory months may not repeat at renewal.

Check the refund rules and purchase channel. A direct website purchase and an app-store purchase may have different procedures. Keep the confirmation and make the evaluation decision before the deadline.

If a broader Proton or Nord bundle duplicates existing services, calculate the cost of the setup you would actually keep. Unused features should not be counted as savings.

A fair test routine for both services

  1. Use the same device and base connection.
  2. Record app version, protocol and server location.
  3. Check public IP and expected DNS behavior with harmless traffic.
  4. Test a call and the applications used every day.
  5. Check sleep, restart and network transitions.
  6. Verify documented disconnect protection and any exceptions.
  7. Repeat enough to distinguish a recurring issue from an isolated event.

Do not infer a provider-wide speed result from a single nearby server. Your route, device and time of use affect the outcome. The useful conclusion is whether the service meets your own routine.

Use our setup guide to understand what browser-based checks can and cannot establish.

Choose the plan that passes the requirement

Proton Free is a clear starting point for a suitable one-device task. For paid use, compare NordVPN and Proton Plus on the actual platform features and subscription conditions; the equal headline device allowance leaves room for a more thoughtful decision.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better for free use?

Proton VPN has a documented Free plan with unlimited data and one simultaneous connection. Verify its server-selection and feature limitations against your task.

Which paid service covers more devices?

The checked NordVPN and Proton Plus documentation both list up to ten simultaneous connections. Account conditions and platform support still matter.

Which is more private?

This comparison does not establish a universal privacy winner. Inspect the relevant policies and evidence for your threat model; HostingRanker has not audited either provider.
