Our strongest starting point here for evaluating a free VPN without a data cap. Upgrade to Plus for its specific server and connection features; choose Unlimited only if the wider Proton tools are useful too.

Server locations and what they mean

The paid country count is not the Free country chooser. Check whether a location is virtual and whether the server supports the task you need. A multi-hop connection changes the route; it does not remove the need to evaluate endpoint security or the provider’s evidence.

A closer look at the official offer

The image records a public page, not a paid customer dashboard or a test result. It may show a region-specific promotion that changes after the capture date. Our tables keep the important figures readable on a phone; use the full-size image to inspect the original context.

The useful difference between free and paid

Many people discover a VPN through a promotional price and then have to decide how long to subscribe. Proton offers another route: a Free plan without a data cap, described in its official plan documentation. That makes it possible to try the core VPN experience before committing to a paid tier.

The absence of a data cap does not make Free identical to Plus. The relevant differences include simultaneous connections, server selection and access to premium functions. Start with the task you need to complete and check whether the free service supports it.

For someone mainly checking a laptop’s connection on occasional unfamiliar networks, Free may be enough to evaluate the app. A household with several active devices or a user who needs a particular location has a different requirement.

Free and Plus: decide from the limitation

The official plan guide lists one simultaneous connection for Free and ten for Plus. It describes unlimited data on Free and a different server-selection model from the paid range. Those are the important starting facts; server counts can change and should not determine the purchase by themselves.

A provider’s server link speed is not the speed you will receive. Your local connection, device, route, congestion and server load all affect throughput. We have not measured Proton VPN speed for this review.

Understand the privacy boundary

A VPN encrypts a part of the network journey and changes the address a destination sees for routed traffic. It does not erase an account login, remove browser tracking or secure a device already under another person’s control. Be specific about the concern you are trying to address.

Proton links to open-source and audit information from its documentation. Such materials are useful evidence to inspect, but the scope matters. An application-code assessment is different from a review of production logging controls, and neither automatically covers every future version.

We have not independently audited Proton’s infrastructure or reproduced an audit. Our research-based assessment should not be read as a guarantee of anonymity. Read the policy and technical materials directly if your decision depends on a particular data-handling claim.

For ordinary use, combine the VPN with supported operating-system updates, strong passwords and multifactor authentication. Those controls address risks that changing an IP address cannot solve.

Protocols, platform differences and daily use

Proton’s protocol documentation describes several options and explains that supported behavior differs by app. Begin with the recommended setting for your current platform. Change it when you have a specific connection problem or requirement, and record the effect.

Check how the app handles a sleeping laptop, a restart and a phone switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data. If you want all traffic blocked until a tunnel is active, verify the relevant operating-system and app settings rather than assuming the ordinary connect button provides that behavior.

Split tunneling, where supported, can help an application use a different route. It also creates an exception to the VPN path. Keep the exception narrow, understand how DNS is handled and retest after an app update.

A browser extension and a device-wide VPN application should be evaluated separately. A working browser connection does not establish that a mail app, game or background service is using the same route.

When paying for Plus makes sense

Pay for an upgrade when it solves a named problem. Perhaps Free’s simultaneous-device limit does not fit your household, you need a specific supported location or a premium function is essential. List that requirement and verify the current paid plan includes it.

Compare VPN Plus with broader Proton bundles only if you will use the additional services. An ecosystem bundle can simplify billing, but unused storage or extra applications do not create value merely because they appear in the package.

Check the total payable, term, renewal amount and purchase channel. A money-back guarantee has conditions and a request process; it is different from trying the Free plan. Keep the order confirmation and cancellation instructions.

For organizational use, look for the appropriate business administration and access-control product. A personal VPN subscription is not a substitute for employee identity management, offboarding or access policy.

A test plan that produces a useful answer

1. Write down the actual task: general browsing, a specific device or a required server location.
2. Install the correct official app and record the operating-system and app versions.
3. Establish a baseline on a harmless website with the VPN off.
4. Connect and check public IP, DNS behavior and normal application access.
5. Test sleep, restart and network changes according to the supported settings.
6. If evaluating Plus, test the specific feature that justified paying.
7. Keep a brief record of failures and configuration changes.

The result should be a practical conclusion such as “works on my laptop and phone with these settings,” not “this service is universally fastest.” Our setup guide explains the limits of browser-based checks.

Alternatives and our verdict

NordVPN: compare it for a broad paid everyday option and check equivalent platform-specific functions rather than the largest bundle.

Private Internet Access: compare it if a larger number of simultaneous connections is a central requirement.

hidemy.name: consider its trial route only after checking platform support and evidence for the privacy claims that matter to you.

Proton’s Free option is a valuable decision path in its own right. If it meets the task, there is no need to upgrade just to make the purchase feel more serious.
