Proton VPN Free vs paid: when an upgrade solves a real limit

An upgrade should remove a problem you actually have

Proton VPN Free is a continuing free tier, not merely a discount that expires after a short introductory period. The documented absence of a data cap makes it a useful starting point for evaluating the service without a paid subscription. That does not make it identical to VPN Plus.

The useful upgrade question is specific: do you need more than one concurrent connection, a particular server choice or a feature reserved for a paid plan? If none of those limits affects the task, paying only to obtain a promotional percentage does not create a saving.

This is a feature comparison, not a measured speed or streaming test. Free can still be sufficient for an individual using a supported application on one device.

Three situations lead to different decisions

One laptop used on public Wi-Fi: Free may meet the need if the connection, platform and selection model work for you. Test the client, check the scope of the tunnel and maintain the usual account-security habits. A VPN does not replace software updates or protect against every form of phishing.

A person using a laptop and phone at the same time: the one-connection allowance becomes a concrete limitation. Consider whether switching between devices is acceptable or whether Plus’s larger allowance removes a recurring inconvenience. Installation count and simultaneous connection count are different quantities.

A household with more than ten concurrent devices: Plus does not solve that particular count constraint on its own. Plus and Unlimited: two different paid decisions

The captured paid offers use EUR and a two-year introduction followed by annual renewal. They are regional observations, not a converted US price list. A free VPN subscription is a distinct plan; a free app download does not mean that every paid feature is included.

VPN Plus focuses on the paid VPN feature set. Proton Unlimited bundles broader Proton services. If the objective is simply to remove the Free VPN connection limit, first examine Plus. Value the wider bundle only when its additional services replace tools you need and have a practical migration path.

Compare the actual payment and the renewal horizon

In the captured offer, Plus costs €83.76 for 24 months and then €83.88 for a single year. The next annual bill is slightly higher than the entire initial two-year payment. Unlimited adds €108 to the initial two years and €36 to the stated annual renewal compared with Plus.

Free remains a zero-subscription-cost option only within its own feature set. A chart showing €0 beside paid plans is not proof that the products are interchangeable. Likewise, the wider bundle’s discount does not prove that its non-VPN services are useful to a particular reader.

Paid access does not eliminate platform differences

Evaluate each needed paid capability within the applicable conditions after deciding to subscribe.

Before payment, save the product name, initial total, service period, renewal and tax treatment. Read the refund conditions and cancellation instructions for the actual purchase route. Do not assume that downloading an app through a store establishes the same billing arrangement as a direct subscription.

If considering Unlimited, include an exit plan for the broader services. A VPN can often be replaced with another client, while mail, stored files and account organization can involve more work. A lower bundle price is less attractive if it creates an unwanted migration dependency.
