Count concurrent connections, not boxes in a drawer
A household may own twelve devices but connect only six at once. Another may regularly connect two laptops, several phones and a television together. List the busiest realistic period before paying for capacity that will never be used or buying a plan that cannot cover it.
Include work devices only when their owner permits a personal VPN. An employer-managed connection or security policy may require a different arrangement. The presence of an app does not override that policy, and this consumer shortlist is not a business team-account comparison.
| Service | Documented simultaneous limit | Selection rule |
|---|---|---|
| Private Internet Access | Unlimited | Start here above ten; account terms still apply |
| NordVPN | 10 | Candidate up to ten when the required apps fit |
| Proton VPN Plus | 10 | Candidate up to ten; Free has one connection |
| CyberGhost | 7 | Candidate up to seven; check registered-device management |
| hidemy.name | 5 | Candidate up to five; resolve platform and renewal gaps |
These numbers describe the published account allowances, not throughput under a full household load. We have not benchmarked simultaneous streaming or speed. Sharing login credentials beyond permitted use is not made acceptable by an unlimited-device label.
Three example households lead to different shortlists
Two people with four phones and laptops in active use: all five paid candidates pass the count gate. Choose by required platform features, subscription commitment and documentation rather than paying specifically for unlimited connections. Proton Free’s one connection does not cover the whole group at once.
A family connecting eight devices together: NordVPN, Proton Plus and PIA pass the documented limit. CyberGhost and hidemy.name are excluded from this direct-device scenario. Do not quietly count a router workaround as equivalent unless the household can use it and accepts its limitations.
A household needing twelve direct app connections: PIA is the qualifying candidate within our partner selection. Unlimited describes its connection allowance; it is not a promise of unlimited bandwidth, no account rules or identical speed on each device. Check the actual account conditions and app requirements before choosing.
If the count fluctuates, include a realistic margin for travel and guests without handing out a shared password indiscriminately. Review active sessions when devices are retired and keep account recovery information under the owner’s control.
One subscription can have several different feature sets
Use our platform compatibility matrix to check Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and routers. It separates a native app from kill-switch and split-tunneling support, and labels facts that remain unverified. A green app cell does not make every feature green.
For example, Proton’s documented split tunneling includes paid-platform restrictions and an experimental macOS implementation with browser limitations. NordVPN’s Linux routing exclusions are not the same as choosing individual applications to bypass the VPN. These distinctions can matter more than an extra connection slot.
A household with an iPhone and a Windows laptop should not assume that a feature demonstrated on Windows will work identically on iOS. Record the exact operation required: exclude one app, preserve local printer access or block traffic after a tunnel interruption. Then consult the current documentation for that system.
Our documentation matrix is not a leak-test result. Features may depend on app versions, operating-system settings and protocol choices. Check that every member can maintain the required setup; the most complicated configuration is not useful if it is routinely turned off.

Original calculations by HostingRanker, using the dated source observations in the table. A lower bar does not establish the best product or comparable features.
The observations above are EUR storefront offers, not converted US quotes. We preserve their currency because a dollar symbol would change the meaning. Use the VPN calculator to compare verified same-currency options and enter your actual extra costs separately.
Dividing a total by ten available connections can flatter an offer when only three are used. Divide by the number of devices actually requiring concurrent protection if you want a per-device budget, and keep the first cash bill visible. A longer prepaid offer can have a lower allocated cost but tie up more money today.
We allocate the first payment across all months it covers, including any bonus months. Cash includes whole billing periods needed to reach the chosen horizon. Renewal rates are held constant for this illustration; they are not guaranteed future quotes. Unknown bills remain unverified. Domains, optional services and taxes are excluded unless explicitly added. Read the calculation method.
A router changes the setup and the protection boundary
A supported VPN-client router can route several home devices through a connection, but its hardware, firmware and chosen protocol must be supported. A provider’s router guide does not mean every ISP router can run that configuration. Manual router setup is different from having a native app on each device.
Devices outside that home network still need their own solution. Router rules may also affect local services and make per-device exceptions more difficult. Confirm how the subscription counts that connection and how failure protection works on the actual router.
For a five-device household considering hidemy.name review, clarify renewal and any essential platform feature still marked unverified. For a seven-device household considering CyberGhost VPN review, examine registered-device management and the applicable refund term. These are useful candidates when their limits fit; they should not be inserted into an eight-device shortlist merely to make it longer.
Verify the exact offer before paying
Use this shortlist to narrow a decision, then read the full review for the product you are considering. Save the exact plan, market, currency, first invoice, service period and renewal terms shown to you. Offers can vary by region and purchase route, and an affiliate link does not promise the same promotion as a dated observation.
Check any requirement that remains unverified before relying on it. An unknown feature is not a confirmed absence, but it cannot satisfy a hard requirement until it is documented. If no listed candidate meets your brief, change the brief or continue researching rather than buying a poor fit.
