Surfshark free trial: choose the right starting point

Try the VPN. Understand the next bill.

Start with the actual trial offer if you want to evaluate the app before a subscription charge. A paid deal with refund protection follows a different billing path.

Evaluate before paying

7 daysOfficial free trial

  • For eligible new users on a 12- or 24-month plan.
  • Payment details required; the offer starts at $0.00.
  • Three simultaneous devices during the trial.
  • Converts to the selected paid plan unless canceled in time.

Pay first, request a refund if eligible

30 daysMoney-back guarantee

  • The first eligible payment starts the refund window.
  • You must request a refund; it is not automatic.
  • Purchase channel and exclusions matter.
  • Canceling renewal alone does not return a payment.

What the current Surfshark trial includes

The important update for desktop users: Surfshark’s current support guide describes a web signup route, so you do not need to begin on a phone. Windows and Mac users can start there and sign into the apps afterward. Advice that limits activation to mobile app stores does not describe this current route.

A trial is attached to a specific order, account and future subscription
QuestionCurrent documented answer
Can I start on the website?Yes; open the dedicated free-trial offer.
Which subscription lengths qualify?12-month and 24-month plans.
Is a payment method required?Yes. Supported options include credit card, PayPal and Apple Pay.
How many devices can connect together?Three during the trial; unlimited after the paid subscription begins.
Will every extra work on every device?Check the selected bundle and each feature’s platform support.

Surfshark’s download page lists its supported app families and the eligible trial payment methods. Do not confuse a free app download with an activated trial. Installing software is only one step; your account must have the appropriate access.

For bundle differences, use our Surfshark review. Choose a VPN plan because it meets your needs, not because a trial makes every optional add-on sound essential.

How to get the Surfshark free trial

  1. Open the dedicated official trial page. Use its trial button rather than assuming an ordinary sale checkout includes free time.
  2. Select an eligible 12- or 24-month option. Read the bundle, future bill and service period before continuing.
  3. Enter your email and accepted payment details. Follow the account instructions shown in checkout.
  4. Save the confirmation and billing schedule. Your order should explicitly show the trial and the first charge that follows.
  5. Install the official app and sign into that account. Then begin testing and set a cancellation reminder.

These steps follow Surfshark’s trial setup instructions. If you see a payment due immediately without the expected trial, stop and ask support to confirm eligibility before authorizing the order.

Record the commitment, not just the monthly equivalent

A long-term plan can display a small per-month equivalent while charging for a longer period in one payment. Save the total future bill and the number of months it buys. Also record the later renewal terms. Our Surfshark discount guide includes a calculator for comparing a quoted offer.

A useful note has five fields: account email, billing provider, trial end time, first payment and cancellation route. Keep the receipt somewhere you can reach without the VPN. Avoid leaving this information only in an open checkout tab that may expire or disappear when you close your browser.

Using the trial on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android

Start by separating the account from the installation. You can create trial access through the official web offer, then install the appropriate client on another supported device. Use the same account credentials; making a second purchase inside another app is unnecessary if your existing trial is already active.

Keep the same account across devices and check the correct app for each platform
DevicePractical setupWhat to avoid
Windows PCChoose the matching official Windows installer, install it and sign in.Downloading an installer from a coupon or “cracked trial” site.
MacUse the official macOS download route for the distribution you need.Assuming all Mac distributions include exactly the same additional features.
iPhone or iPadFollow the official iOS download link, then sign into your existing account.Confusing app installation through Apple with purchasing through Apple.
AndroidUse the official Google Play link or Surfshark’s own APK route. An unofficial APK advertised as a permanent premium trial.
Another supported deviceCheck the official download hub and that device’s setup instructions.Treating a browser extension as protection for every app on the device.

Our Surfshark download and installation guide brings together the official platform links and common setup problems. If this is your first VPN on an iPhone, our VPN for iPhone guide explains the practical choices in more detail.

When testing several devices, make a simple rotation: the phone you use every day, your work or personal computer, then any tablet or television that matters to your purchase. Log out or disconnect devices you have finished testing before adding another simultaneous connection. A successful connection on a laptop does not answer whether the experience on your phone is convenient.

7 free days and a 30-day refund window are different

1

Trial begins

You evaluate the service before the scheduled subscription charge.

2

You make a decision

Keep the selected subscription or cancel through the correct billing channel before its deadline.

3

A paid period starts

If charged, refund eligibility is a separate question. You need to request a refund within the applicable window.

Surfshark’s trial page describes a 30-day refund period after the first charge. That does not make the offer “37 days free.” The final 30 days concern money already paid and an eligible refund request.

For planning, use the exact timestamps in the confirmation instead of counting calendar squares. Starting late in the evening does not necessarily give you the entire final calendar day. Do not leave a cancellation until the last minute; a login problem or an unexpected billing channel can take time to resolve.

We suggest setting two reminders: one soon after signup to confirm that everything works, and another well before the billing deadline to make the final decision. That decision can be to keep a good service. The point is that it should be deliberate, with the upcoming total visible.

How to cancel the Surfshark free trial

Cancel where the subscription is billed. The right process depends on the seller, not whether you happen to be using an iPhone, Android phone or PC today. Use this selector to jump to the relevant instructions.

Use the order receipt, not the device you installed the app on.

Find the seller on your receipt or subscription record before canceling. The instructions for every route are below.

Find my billing provider

Uninstalling is not a cancellation

Removing the app does not submit a subscription cancellation. Disconnecting the VPN and logging out are also different actions. Look for a confirmation that future billing has been stopped, then save it. If the page offers several follow-up choices, continue until the cancellation itself is confirmed.

First, identify who is charging you

Search for the original confirmation email and match it with your subscription record. A store receipt points to that store’s billing process; a website order may name Surfshark or its checkout processor. Check the account used for the purchase if the plan is missing from the account you normally use.

Surfshark’s subscription management guide explains where to review the plan, expiry, renewal and auto-renewal information. Keep these distinctions clear when looking at an account: an access end date, a payment date and the refund deadline do not necessarily describe the same event.

If you cannot identify the seller, contact Surfshark support with the receipt and ask which channel manages this order. For a reseller purchase, use the seller’s instructions. Do not publish full receipts, payment-card numbers or account credentials on a forum to get help.

Before starting another subscription to fix missing access, compare the account email on the receipt with the email you are signing in with. Paying again can create a second billing problem without solving the first one.

Cancel a trial purchased through Surfshark’s website

  1. Sign into your Surfshark account on the official website.
  2. Open the account menu, then Subscription.
  3. Open the Payments area and choose the option to cancel auto-renewal.
  4. Complete the confirmation steps and check the resulting subscription status.

This follows Surfshark’s cancellation instructions. If the control is missing or fails, contact its live support and identify the order. Ask explicitly to stop the upcoming trial conversion or renewal, and keep the confirmation.

Do not assume that closing a cancellation dialog submitted the request. Return to the subscription page and check the status once more. If you also want a refund for a charge already made, request that separately; a cancellation confirmation is not a refund approval.

Cancel a trial billed by Apple

On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Surfshark, then use the cancellation control and confirm. Apple’s instructions say to cancel a free or discounted trial at least 24 hours before it ends.

If there is no cancellation button and you see an expiration message, Apple says the subscription is already canceled. If it is missing entirely, check the Apple Account on the receipt. A website purchase will not become Apple-billed just because you install the iOS app.

Read the displayed access-end information when canceling. Do not assume that every store trial retains access for all unused days after early cancellation. Make your decision with enough time for Apple’s deadline, rather than waiting for the last day of the test plan below.

Cancel a trial billed by Google Play

Open Google Play subscriptions using the Google Account that purchased the plan. Select the subscription, choose Manage, then Cancel subscription, and follow the remaining prompts. These web steps come from Google Play’s cancellation guide.

Google explicitly notes that uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription. If the plan does not appear, check your other Google Accounts and the receipt before deciding there is nothing to cancel.

Save the resulting confirmation. Keep the store’s displayed end date and billing information with your original order so that you can identify the same subscription if you later need help. Canceling in an unrelated Surfshark account does not replace the Google Play process.

A practical plan for evaluating Surfshark before the charge

You do not need a laboratory to make a useful purchase decision. You need repeatable checks of the things you actually do. The schedule below is a suggested workflow, not a requirement to keep a trial active until its last day. Move the final decision earlier whenever your billing deadline requires it.

Use your own billing deadline; do not wait until day seven to start canceling

Check that the tunnel is actually connected

Surfshark’s connection verification guide recommends checking the app status, the public IP and DNS results. Compare the public IP shown while disconnected with the VPN connection, then follow the provider’s DNS-check instructions. Treat this as a basic configuration check, not proof of complete anonymity or a full security audit.

Compare like with like

If you measure speed, use the same device, location and test service with and without the VPN, close background downloads and repeat the measurement. Record latency as well as throughput if calls or games matter. Do not turn one unusually high or low result into a general conclusion about every server.

Test the activities that justify the bill

Try a real video meeting, your ordinary browsing and any service you rely on. A fast speed-test number does not prove that every app will behave well. If an app fails, note the device, protocol, approximate time and server location before asking support for help.

Check protection during ordinary interruptions

Read our VPN kill switch guide, then check the settings available on your platform. Observe what happens when your device sleeps and reconnects. A manual disconnect is not necessarily the same event as an unexpected tunnel failure. Avoid testing with sensitive transfers running.

For a household, ask each actual user whether they would leave the VPN enabled. An extra app that everyone disables because it interrupts essential tasks is poor value, even at an attractive introductory price. For travel, prepare and test before departure; home-network results do not guarantee access on a future hotel or restricted network.

Your trial decision checklist

This checklist stays on this page and resets when you reload. It does not cancel a subscription or contact Surfshark.

Already charged? Check cancellation and refund eligibility separately

First establish what happened: the expected trial conversion, another subscription, a renewal or a pending authorization. Compare the date and amount with the receipt. If you wanted to stop future charges, cancel through the actual billing channel while you investigate the existing payment.

Surfshark’s refund policy generally covers an eligible initial purchase requested within 30 days. Its support guide names direct purchases and authorized channels including Paddle, Google Play and Cleverbridge. Contact Surfshark live support with the order details and ask for a refund, not merely account cancellation.

The payment channel determines the refund process
Who billed the order?Where to start
Surfshark or an authorized web checkoutSurfshark support; provide the order and ask about eligibility.
Apple App StoreApple’s refund process; approval follows Apple’s rules.
Google PlayWithin 48 hours, Google can consider a request; Surfshark says its support can assist with later requests.
Amazon or another sellerThe seller’s policy and support channel; do not assume direct-purchase terms apply.

For Apple, use its official refund instructions and reportaproblem.apple.com. Select the purchase and submit a refund request. Eligibility is not guaranteed; a pending charge may need to post before it can be requested. Apple’s stated 24–48 hours is a status-update timeframe, not a promise that refunded money reaches your bank then.

Important refund exclusions

The Surfshark terms exclude recurring renewals and generally limit refunds to one per service. Prepaid or gift-card payments, anonymous Dedicated IP purchases and certain separately purchased Alternative ID services, such as Alternative Number, have exclusions. A different offer with a trial of 30 days or longer also has different refund treatment. Read the rules for the actual order rather than assuming every purchase has identical protection.

A refund approval and the return of funds are separate events. Keep the support confirmation and ask for the processing timeframe for your payment method. Never treat a refund as completed just because you submitted the request.

Trial missing, payment required or login not working?

The website asks me to pay todayConfirm you entered through the trial offer and that your order is eligible. Do not confirm an unexpected charge.
I want a trial without a credit cardCheck the accepted alternative payment methods. No physical card does not mean no payment agreement.

I cannot find a cancellation buttonIdentify the seller from the receipt and follow the matching billing route.
There is a small pending paymentCheck whether it is an authorization or a posted charge before calling it a subscription bill.

Surfshark’s payment terms allow a nominal payment-method authorization that is reversed; that is different from a settled subscription payment. The amount shown by your bank alone cannot tell you which event occurred. Ask the seller or bank if the status is unclear.

When contacting support, describe one problem precisely: “My order says a trial, but this account asks me to buy again” is more actionable than “It is not working.” Include the order reference through the official support channel, the device and the error message. Do not send your password or full card details.

Do not install a modified app to bypass eligibility. You want to evaluate the software you might actually pay for, under the subscription terms that would apply to you. An unofficial build cannot provide that comparison.

What if you need a VPN that stays free?

A temporary trial makes sense when you are considering a paid subscription and want to check whether it suits you. It is a poor match if you already know you cannot accept a future bill and do not want to manage a cancellation deadline.

Proton VPN’s official free plan is an alternative with no ongoing subscription price, unlimited data and one simultaneous device. It has a different feature set from a paid plan; do not assume the same server selection or specialist features. Our Proton VPN review explains the paid and free choices.

For a broader comparison, see our best VPN shortlist. If you are comparing trial policies specifically, the NordVPN free trial guide separates its trial route from refunds as well. Judge each provider on your own use case and cancellation terms, rather than on the largest number of advertised “risk-free” days.

Is the Surfshark free trial worth using?

It is a useful starting point if Surfshark is already on your shortlist, you are comfortable providing a payment method and you will test it before the billing deadline. The strongest reason to continue is that it worked for your essential tasks at a subscription cost you accept.

Before buying, review three things together: the app experience, the entire first subscription bill and the later renewal. A trial answers the first question only if you use it; a discount answers the cost question only if you understand what the payment covers.

Frequently asked questions

Does Surfshark have a free trial?

Yes. The current official offer gives eligible first-time users seven days before the scheduled paid subscription begins. Confirm that your own order includes it.

Is the Surfshark free trial 7 days or 30 days?

The free trial is seven days. The 30-day period is a separate money-back guarantee after an eligible first payment, with a refund request required.

Can I get a Surfshark free trial on a PC or Mac?

Yes. Start through the official web trial offer, then sign into the appropriate desktop app. Activation is not limited to mobile app stores.

Can I use the trial on my iPhone and Android phone?

Use the official apps with the same active trial account. Avoid creating a second paid subscription when signing in on another device.

Does Surfshark offer a free trial without payment details?

The documented web offer requires an accepted payment method. PayPal or Apple Pay availability does not make it a no-payment-details trial.

How many devices can I use during the trial?

Surfshark documents three simultaneous devices during the trial. Its paid subscription allows unlimited simultaneous connections.

Can an existing customer claim another trial?

Do not assume so. The offer is intended for eligible first-time users. Ask support about your account before confirming an order.

Will I be charged automatically after the trial?

Yes, unless you cancel in time under your order’s billing rules. Record the total scheduled payment rather than just a displayed monthly equivalent.

Does deleting the Surfshark app cancel the trial?

No. Use the subscription controls of the actual seller and save the cancellation confirmation. Removing software is a separate action.

When should I cancel an Apple-billed trial?

Apple says at least 24 hours before a free or discounted trial ends. Read the displayed access-end details and give yourself additional time to resolve account problems.

Is canceling auto-renewal the same as requesting a refund?

No. Cancellation stops future billing; a refund request concerns a payment already made. You may need to complete both processes.

Is downloading Surfshark free?

You can download the official app without buying it from a download site. Using the VPN still requires valid account access, such as an active trial or subscription.

Do I need a coupon code to activate the trial?

The official instructions use the dedicated trial signup flow, not a required coupon code. A general discount link should not be assumed to include trial access.

Should I choose the trial or a paid promotional plan?

Use the trial if you need to evaluate the service first. Compare paid offers when you are ready to accept the full bill. Check the final order because the two routes can have different pricing.
