Free trial vs. money-back guarantee: what you are agreeing to
| Question | Google Play trial | Website purchase with refund terms |
|---|---|---|
| Do I pay for the subscription immediately? | The accepted trial offer sets when paid billing starts. Check its confirmation screen. | Yes. Review the complete checkout amount before paying. |
| How long do I have? | The exact period shown in your account’s offer. | The published guarantee is tied to the initial purchase, not the app installation date. |
| How do I prevent future billing? | Cancel the store subscription before its trial expires. | Turn off auto-renewal in the account that bills you. |
| Does cancellation send money back? | Canceling prevents future renewal; a charge already made needs separate review. | No. Request a refund separately if the purchase qualifies. |
| Where should I keep evidence? | Store offer, subscription page, receipt and cancellation confirmation. | Order receipt, account billing page and any support confirmation. |
Think of the trial as a short billing arrangement attached to a subscription, not a separate free edition of NordVPN. Likewise, a return window does not make a paid checkout a zero-dollar transaction. Your available balance may be reduced while you evaluate the app and wait for any approved refund.
If your budget cannot absorb the full charge, make that decision before opening checkout. “I intend to cancel” is not a substitute for understanding the payment you are authorizing.
Is the NordVPN free trial 3 days or 7 days?
The dedicated Android page advertises three days at our September 10, 2026 check. However, the NordVPN homepage contains both a three-day signup message and a seven-day statement in its deals FAQ. That inconsistency explains why you may encounter different numbers while researching the same product.
We use the more specific Android trial documentation for the advertised route, then ask you to verify the offer presented by Google Play. Do not plan your cancellation using a search-result snippet, an old review or a banner from another country.
Before accepting, save the screen that states when the trial ends and what happens next. If it offers three days, treat that as your window. If a different duration appears, keep evidence of that exact offer and its terms. A website article cannot extend the date in your subscription account.
A claim of a “30-day NordVPN free trial” often describes the paid money-back route instead. Check whether the button opens a store trial or asks you to pay for a subscription. The wording around the payment is more useful than the headline.
Who can get a NordVPN free trial?
NordVPN’s free-trial support article identifies an Android route through Google Play, limits trials to one per customer and says website purchases do not have a free trial. Availability still depends on the offer actually presented to you.
For a US reader, the practical starting point is the official Google Play app, the correct Google account and the Nord Account you intend to use. Having an Android phone does not by itself prove that your account is eligible. An existing subscription or a previously used trial is a reason to inspect your account carefully before confirming anything else.
- New to NordVPN: look for an explicit trial offer, including the end date and future price.
- Already subscribed: sign in to your existing account first. Reinstalling an app does not require another purchase.
- Used a trial before: do not expect deleting the app or creating another login to reset eligibility.
- No trial shown: stop if your intention is to avoid an immediate subscription payment.
If you believe your account should qualify, ask official support to check it before purchasing. Our download and login troubleshooting guide helps distinguish an account problem from an installation problem.
How to get the NordVPN free trial on Android
Begin with the official NordVPN Android download route and choose Google Play. An APK installation and a Google Play trial are different distribution paths; do not assume sideloading an app creates a store offer.
- Install the official app. Check the store listing and publisher before installing. Avoid modified “premium unlocked” versions.
- Use the intended accounts. Confirm which Google account is handling the store purchase and which Nord Account will hold the subscription.
- Inspect the offer. Look for a stated free period, the first charge after it, the billing term and any tax. If the screen is a normal paid subscription, do not treat it as a trial.
- Accept only the terms you want. Review the final subscription confirmation rather than relying on the previous promotional screen.
- Record the deadline immediately. Put a reminder before the actual end time and keep the receipt. Do not rely solely on a notification arriving.
- Connect and evaluate. Allow the app’s VPN configuration request, connect to a server and run the practical checks below.
Google Play’s subscription guidance explains that a trial can automatically turn into a paid billing period. It also describes selecting a payment method during signup. A trial should therefore be treated as a subscription decision, even when its initial service charge is zero.
Keep the first setup simple. Test one device and one nearby server before adding exceptions or installing on every household device. If you spend most of a short trial troubleshooting login, you will have little useful evidence about whether the service fits your needs.
NordVPN free trial on iPhone and iPad
We have not verified a universal iPhone free-trial offer in the official sources reviewed for this guide. The documented mobile trial route is through Google Play on Android. A free App Store download is not proof that the VPN subscription is free.
If your App Store account displays a trial or introductory offer, read that offer’s terms directly. If it does not, one way to evaluate NordVPN on iPhone is to purchase on the website under the applicable money-back terms, install the iOS app and sign in to that account. Avoid accidentally buying again inside the app.
The device you use and the company that bills you are separate facts. For example, using NordVPN on an iPhone does not automatically mean Apple manages the purchase. Look at your receipt. That tells you whether cancellation belongs in Nord Account or Apple’s subscription settings.
If Apple does bill you, use Apple’s cancellation instructions. For an Apple trial you do not want to renew, Apple advises canceling at least 24 hours before it ends. Apple also handles its own refund requests; do not assume a website refund promise applies to an App Store purchase.
See our VPN for iPhone guide for iOS settings, Private Relay differences and everyday limitations. For installation, use the official iPhone download page or our step-by-step iPhone setup instructions.
NordVPN free trial for Windows, Mac and Linux
The desktop download is free to obtain; that does not create free access to the subscription service. NordVPN’s documented website route is a paid plan with refund terms. Choose it only if you are comfortable paying the initial bill and actively managing any later cancellation or refund request.
If you already activated an eligible subscription or trial, try signing in to that same Nord Account on your other supported device before buying again. Check that the account shows an active entitlement and that the app actually connects. We did not activate an Android trial to independently verify every cross-device combination for this guide.
Use the appropriate official page: Windows, Mac or Linux. Our NordVPN download guide explains system requirements and installation differences, including the Mac website and App Store builds.
For a meaningful desktop evaluation, use the same machine, network and usual tasks you expect to keep using. A quick successful connection on a spare laptop says little about a work computer with company policies, custom DNS or another VPN client installed.
Do you need a credit card, and what happens after the trial?
Do not assume “free trial” means “no payment method.” The store confirmation tells you which payment method is being authorized and what it will charge. The available methods can depend on your account and purchase channel; we do not promise a card-free NordVPN trial.
Google Play says the first paid billing period starts automatically when a trial ends unless you cancel in time. Its guidance also notes that an authorization hold may appear before renewal. A pending hold and a completed subscription charge are different, so check both the store receipt and the payment status before deciding what happened. Read Google Play’s billing explanation.
Read the full bill, not just a monthly equivalent
Illustrative USD example, not a NordVPN price quote: an offer described as $5 per month, billed annually, represents a $60 yearly subscription before any applicable tax. If that is the accepted post-trial plan, the first charge can be the full $60, not a $5 test payment.
Copy these four details from the actual offer: amount due now, amount due when the trial ends, length of the paid term and next renewal amount. Also check whether optional products are selected. An inexpensive monthly equivalent is less useful than knowing the amount that will leave your account.
Use our NordVPN pricing guide to understand the plan structure and our VPN cost calculator for dated subscription comparisons. Store offers and website offers can differ; do not copy a website price into a store purchase assumption.
How to cancel a NordVPN free trial or subscription
First identify who bills you. Use the store or account on the receipt, even if you have since moved to another device. Removing the app, disconnecting the VPN and turning off its notifications are not subscription cancellation.
| Billing channel | Where to cancel | What to save |
|---|---|---|
| Google Play | Open Google Play subscriptions, select NordVPN and complete the cancellation steps. | The canceled status and displayed access/expiry date. |
| NordVPN website | Sign in to Nord Account and open Billing → Subscriptions to cancel auto-renewal. | The confirmation email and account status. |
| Apple App Store | On iPhone, open Settings → your name → Subscriptions → NordVPN, then cancel if available. | The expiry date or confirmation that renewal is off. |
| Another seller | Follow the subscription controls or support process shown on that seller’s receipt. | The seller’s cancellation reference. |
Official instructions: Google Play, Nord Account and Apple subscriptions.
Make cancellation a completed task
After following the steps, return to the subscription page and read its status. If you only reached a retention offer or a confirmation prompt, you may not have finished. Save the final result somewhere you can find it later.
If you cannot find NordVPN in the expected account, check another Google or Apple account you use and search your receipts. Do not conclude that billing has stopped just because the app is absent. Google explicitly notes that uninstalling does not cancel a subscription.
Set your own decision point before the exact deadline. Leave room for login recovery, travel and support delays. Our checklist is not a timer and does not cancel anything for you. If you already paid and want money returned, continue to the separate refund process.
How the NordVPN 30-day money-back guarantee works
The 30-day guarantee is a paid evaluation route. NordVPN’s refund policy applies it to a qualifying initial subscription purchase; renewal payments are excluded under that policy unless applicable law requires otherwise. The starting point is the purchase, not when you first install or use the app.
- Locate the original receipt and confirm the billing channel.
- Check eligibility and the purchase date before the refund window closes.
- For an eligible NordVPN-handled payment, contact official support through live chat.
- Follow the refund link and confirmation steps provided by support.
- Keep the confirmation and track the payment status in billing history.
NordVPN says approved funds can take up to 10 business days to reach your payment method. Canceling auto-renewal alone does not submit a refund request.
Apple-billed payments go through Apple. NordVPN says Google Play payments can be considered by its support under the stated refund terms; Google may also handle a request depending on timing and circumstances. Read Google’s policy or Apple’s refund process for a store purchase.
Do not budget on combining a short store trial and a fresh 30-day refund period into a guaranteed longer free session. Ask the billing provider how the specific payment is treated before relying on that assumption.
No trial showing, charged early or unable to cancel?
| What you see | What to check first | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| A paid plan but no free-trial label | Account eligibility and the exact offer on the confirmation screen. | Do not confirm a purchase if it is not the arrangement you want. |
| A charge you did not expect | The receipt, accepted trial end, paid term and whether the transaction is pending or completed. | Contact the billing provider with the receipt and saved offer. |
| NordVPN missing from subscriptions | Which Google, Apple or Nord Account handled the original purchase. | Search your receipts, then sign in to the matching account. |
| App still asks you to subscribe | Whether you logged into the Nord Account linked to the entitlement. | Resolve the account mismatch before paying again. |
| Cancellation button not visible | Whether renewal is already off, the term expired or another seller bills you. | Read the displayed status and use that seller’s support. |
| Refund requested but money absent | Whether the request was actually confirmed and the stated processing period has passed. | Check the refund status and follow up with the reference number. |
Keep your first support message short and specific: purchase channel, date, order reference, expected offer and what happened instead. For example: “My receipt shows an annual subscription, but I expected the trial shown on the attached offer. Please explain which offer was accepted and whether this payment is eligible for a refund.”
Send evidence through the provider’s official support channel. Remove full card numbers, passwords, login codes and unrelated transactions from screenshots. A useful receipt reference is not a reason to share every detail of your financial account.
If the problem is connectivity rather than billing, use our NordVPN troubleshooting guide. Fixing a login loop and stopping a renewal are separate tasks; completing one does not prove the other is resolved.
What to test before the trial ends
A useful VPN trial answers a personal question: does this work reliably enough on my devices for the price I would actually pay? A green connected label is only the beginning. Use the checklist below alongside your own notes.
Checks stay in this page only and reset when you reload. Download a plain-text copy to keep your own notes. No account or payment details are requested.
Choose a small set of real tasks
Start with ordinary browsing, one video call, a large file you are allowed to download and the services you use most. Record whether they work normally, require an exception or fail. Check on your usual Wi-Fi and, for a phone, cellular data. A single impressive speed-test result is less valuable than a stable daily workflow.
For repeatable observations, keep the device and network consistent, record the selected server and protocol, and compare more than one attempt. If results change sharply, try a nearby server before assuming the subscription is unusable. Keep a typical range of results instead of relying on your fastest attempt.
Use our VPN setup and leak-checking guide to check IP and DNS behavior, and the kill switch guide to understand interruption settings. Test with non-sensitive activity. A successful check of one configuration does not prove every application is protected in every circumstance.
Evaluating streaming during your trial? Use the NordVPN Netflix guide to check restrictions and document your actual playback result.
If your purchase is for a China trip, check NordVPN’s mainland-China limitations and whether an applicable refund deadline falls before your departure.
A practical three-session evaluation plan
| Session | Focus | Decision evidence |
|---|---|---|
| First session | Install, sign in, connect and record the billing deadline. | Can you establish the connection and find the subscription controls? |
| Second session | Use normal work, browsing, calls and permitted media on your real network. | Which tasks work, and which require settings you are willing to maintain? |
| Decision session, before the deadline | Check reconnect behavior, review the full bill and decide whether to continue. | A deliberate keep-or-cancel decision, with confirmation saved if you leave. |
If you choose the longer paid evaluation route, repeat the same tasks on different days and devices rather than spending the entire period browsing settings. Try the circumstances that originally made you want a VPN: a travel network, a phone switching connections, or a household with several devices. Do not wait until the final day to discover a critical incompatibility.
Before starting, write down one must-have and one deal-breaker. A must-have might be reliable video calls from your home connection. A deal-breaker might be a required application that cannot work with your intended setup. This keeps a discount or a long feature list from replacing your actual decision criteria.
Our NordVPN Windows test provides a separately dated example of documented observations and their limits. It can help you structure your own evaluation; it cannot tell you how your phone, router or office network will behave.
Free-trial codes, free months and “free forever” claims
We have not verified a universal NordVPN free-trial code. The documented Android route is an in-app store offer. A coupon can change a paid subscription’s price without creating a trial, and bonus months can extend a paid term without removing the upfront charge.
Before using any promotion, identify what changes: price, length of service, included products or payment timing. Those are four separate things. Check that the final order reflects the promotion you expected before you confirm it.
Be skeptical of websites offering shared NordVPN logins, modified installers or a “lifetime free” account in exchange for payment details. Use the official download hub and your own account. You do not need a third-party installer to find out whether a genuine trial offer is available.
For security expectations, read what a VPN does and does not protect. A VPN does not make a phishing page trustworthy, erase information you submit to a website or replace account security. Those limits apply during a trial just as they do during a paid subscription.
Need an ongoing free VPN instead of a trial?
If your main requirement is ongoing access without a subscription payment, compare an actual free plan rather than repeatedly chasing trial offers. Proton VPN Free is an alternative with no data or time limit and one simultaneous connection. It is a different product from NordVPN’s short evaluation route.
The tradeoffs matter: Proton’s Free versus paid comparison places features such as its broader paid server selection and streaming-oriented premium service in paid plans. A no-cost plan can suit basic browsing while a more specific location, multiple devices or a particular service may change the decision.
Read our Proton VPN review and Free versus paid guide. If you choose the free route, select the clearly labeled Free option rather than assuming every button on a provider’s website creates a free account.
A trial makes sense when you want to evaluate a particular paid product. A free plan makes sense when avoiding recurring subscription costs is itself a requirement. Deciding which problem you are solving will save more time than collecting a list of promotional codes.
Is the NordVPN free trial worth using?
Yes, if an eligible offer is shown and you can evaluate the service before its deadline. It gives you a structured opportunity to check your own devices. The paid money-back route may fit someone who needs a longer evaluation and can comfortably cover the full initial payment.
Neither route removes the need to inspect billing terms. Before you begin, know what you want to test, what you would pay if you stay and where you will cancel if you leave. If those three details are unclear, resolve them before subscribing.

Frequently asked questions
Does NordVPN have a free trial?
Yes. NordVPN documents a Google Play trial for eligible first-time Android customers. Website purchases use a paid money-back guarantee route instead. Confirm the offer displayed to your account before subscribing.
Is the NordVPN free trial 3 days or 7 days?
The dedicated Android page advertises three days at our September 10, 2026 check. The homepage also contains seven-day wording. Use the duration and end time in your actual store offer, rather than assuming either applies universally.
Is there a 30-day NordVPN free trial?
The commonly advertised 30-day option is a money-back guarantee attached to a paid purchase. It requires an upfront payment and an eligible refund request if you do not want to keep the service.
Can I get a NordVPN free trial without a credit card?
Do not assume that no payment method is required. Review the methods and future charge shown by your store or checkout. This guide does not verify a universal card-free trial.
Can I start a NordVPN free trial on an iPhone?
We did not verify a universal iPhone trial in the official sources reviewed. If the App Store shows an introductory offer to your account, its terms apply. A free app download alone is not a free VPN subscription.
Can I use the trial on a Windows PC or Mac?
The documented signup route is Android through Google Play. If you already have an active entitlement, sign in to the same Nord Account on your other supported device and check access before buying again. We did not independently activate a trial to verify every cross-device combination.
Will NordVPN charge me after the trial?
A store trial can renew into the paid subscription you accepted. Check the full charge and term on the confirmation screen and cancel before the stated deadline if you do not want to continue.
Does uninstalling NordVPN cancel the trial?
No. Manage cancellation through the store or account that bills you, then verify the canceled status. Removing the app does not finish that process.
Does turning off auto-renewal automatically request a refund?
No. Stopping future renewal and requesting money back for a completed payment are separate actions. Use the refund process for the relevant seller if you believe the payment qualifies.
Can I get a refund for an Apple App Store purchase?
Apple reviews its own refund requests. Use Apple’s Report a Problem process and check the decision there; NordVPN cannot issue the refund for an Apple-billed purchase.
Can I restart a trial by reinstalling the app?
Reinstallation does not reset eligibility. NordVPN’s support documentation limits free trials to one per customer.
Is there a NordVPN free-trial code?
We have not verified a universal code. Check the official in-app offer. A paid-plan coupon or bonus-month promotion is not automatically a free trial.
Is the NordVPN app free to download?
The installer or app-store download can be free while VPN access still requires an active entitlement. Downloading, subscribing and connecting are different steps.
What should I test during the trial?
Check ordinary browsing, calls, your usual services, reconnecting after sleep or a network change, and the protection settings available on your device. Record billing details before you begin and decide before your actual deadline.
