Before you download: the right app, account and device

If you searched for “Nord VPN download,” you are looking for NordVPN, the provider’s official brand spelling. Start with the device you will actually use. A Windows installer will not run on an iPhone, and adding a browser extension does not install the desktop VPN application.

Before opening an installer, check three things: your operating system version, whether you already have a paid account, and whether you control the device. A company-managed laptop may require administrator approval or its own VPN configuration. Do not replace an employer’s VPN profile just to make a consumer app connect.

1. Check the device: use its About or system information screen to identify the OS version and, on Windows, system type.
2. Check the account: find your original purchase confirmation if you cannot remember which email or sign-in method you used.
3. Check ordinary internet access: finish any hotel or airport Wi-Fi sign-in before installing or attempting to connect.

NordVPN system requirements: check before installing

This is a snapshot of the current app requirements, not a promise that every older download still receives updates. NordVPN’s operating-system support page is the reference to revisit when an app store reports that your device is incompatible.

Compatibility is more than finding a file that opens. An old app may lack security fixes or features described in a current review. NordVPN’s legacy Windows guide says the client for Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 32-bit no longer receives updates or technical support. Updating to a supported system is a better starting point than collecting old installers.

How to download and install NordVPN on Windows

Use the official Windows download page on your PC. The current Windows installation guide identifies the installer as NordVPNInstall.exe and covers Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11.

1. Download the installer, then open it from your browser’s downloads list or Downloads folder.
2. Check that the download came through NordVPN’s official page before approving the Windows installation prompt.
3. Follow the installer. Review optional extras, such as a password manager or browser extension, and select only what you want.
4. Launch NordVPN and choose Log in. Complete the Nord Account sign-in in the browser.
5. Allow the browser to return to NordVPN when prompted, then select Secure my connection or choose a country.
6. Wait for the app’s connected status and complete the connection checks below.

If Windows refuses to run the file, first check that the download completed and that you chose the correct supported system. Repeatedly clicking a partial installer will not repair it. On a managed PC, ask the administrator about installation permissions rather than trying to bypass the policy.

NordVPN download for Mac: website or App Store?

There are two official Mac distribution paths. Start at the NordVPN Mac download page and choose deliberately, because the website build and App Store build have differences in protection features and kill-switch behavior. Both are NordVPN apps.

NordVPN’s Mac version comparison is the source for these differences. An iPhone App Store listing is a different application again. Do not use the presence of one subscription across devices as evidence that all of their feature menus are identical.

Install the website version

1. Download the Mac package through the official page. NordVPN’s guide currently calls it NordVPN.pkg.
2. Keep the package in a local folder and open it. Follow the installation prompts and authorize installation with your Mac credentials when required.
3. Open NordVPN, sign in and complete the return from the browser to the application.
4. Follow the app’s connection prompts, select a server and verify the connection.

If macOS cannot verify a file, redownload from the official route and investigate the message; do not turn off system protection merely to make an unknown package open.

How to download NordVPN on iPhone and iPad

Open the official iPhone download page on your device and follow its App Store link. You do not need a desktop installer, an Android APK or a profile sent by an unknown website. The native app handles its own VPN configuration request.

1. Install the linked NordVPN app from the App Store and open it.
2. Review the privacy and notification choices. Use Log in if you already have an account.
3. Sign in to the account that holds your NordVPN subscription.
4. Start a connection. When iOS asks to add a VPN configuration, allow the request initiated by the app.
5. Confirm with the device’s passcode or biometric authentication if requested, and wait for the connected status.

These steps follow NordVPN’s iPhone and iPad instructions. If the configuration request was refused earlier, revisit the app’s setup guidance before trying to purchase again: permission to create a connection is separate from your subscription.

For example, you might install the app at home and later move from hotel Wi-Fi to cellular data. The useful check is whether your chosen connection resumes after that change. NordVPN for Android: app store or official APK

The official Android page provides the starting route for phones and tablets. An app-store installation is generally the simplest path when the supported store is available on your device. NordVPN also documents an official APK route for manual installation.

Install through an official app store

1. Follow the provider’s store link and install NordVPN.
2. Open the app and choose the existing-account login if you have already subscribed.
3. Finish the browser sign-in and return to the app.
4. Start a server connection and approve the Android VPN connection request.
5. Confirm the connection, then check your reconnect and battery-management settings during ordinary use.

When you need the Android APK

Get the APK through NordVPN’s own Android download page. If Android asks to permit installation from that source, review the source-specific permission and remove it after installation if you no longer need it. Do not substitute a “premium unlocked” file or a third-party mirror for the official package.

The provider’s Android setup documentation covers both routes. A manually installed app also needs an update plan: return to the provider’s current instructions rather than assuming your chosen store manages that installation. How to download NordVPN for Linux: GUI and CLI options

Start at NordVPN’s Linux download page. A terminal-only description is incomplete: NordVPN documents both a graphical app and command-line use. The supported package and desktop environment depend on your distribution.

1. Identify your distribution release and architecture. Check them against the current Linux installation instructions.
2. Choose the graphical installation route if you want a desktop interface, or the command-line route for terminal use.
3. Follow the official package or installation-script instructions. Read what a command downloads and executes before running it with elevated privileges.
4. Sign in using the installed app, then connect and inspect the reported connection status.

On a headless machine, NordVPN provides a token-based login procedure; treat that token as a credential and keep it out of public logs, screenshots and shared scripts.

Chrome, Firefox and Edge

Use the browser links in the official download hub to reach the extension store. NordVPN’s browser-extension documentation describes protection for browser traffic. An extension is useful when that limited scope is intentional; it should not be mistaken for the native VPN app covering other applications.

Apple TV and Android TV

NordVPN has dedicated Apple TV and Android TV download pages. Check the exact TV platform and OS version before installing. A television, streaming stick and set-top box can each have a different app ecosystem even when they connect to the same screen.

Fire TV, other TV systems and routers

Choose your platform in the official hub. Do not assume an Android phone APK is the correct installer for every TV. For a router, check the exact model and firmware against NordVPN’s router instructions before buying hardware or replacing firmware. A router VPN client is a different setup from a router that only allows VPN traffic to pass through.

Is NordVPN free to download? Installer, subscription and trial explained

The app download is free; the main NordVPN service is paid. A download button labeled “free” does not mean permanent free access to the VPN network. Likewise, downloading an app does not make an advertised trial automatically available to your account.

Before accepting a trial or subscription, read the terms shown for your account, country and store. Check when billing begins, the first total payment, renewal frequency and cancellation route. Promotional trial availability can change, so a remembered offer or a search snippet is not enough to establish eligibility.

NordVPN’s refund policy describes a 30-day money-back guarantee for eligible initial subscription purchases. It excludes renewals under that guarantee except where applicable law requires otherwise. Apple-billed refunds go through Apple, and other sellers can have their own handling. A refund policy involves a payment and a refund request; it is not the same as an unpaid trial.

From download to a working connection: four separate checks

This simple sequence is also a troubleshooting tool. If you are signed in but cannot connect, repeatedly downloading the installer is unlikely to be the most useful first step. If you cannot sign in, switching countries inside the VPN will not fix the account problem.

For your first connection, use the app’s recommended server or a nearby location that fits your needs. Note which network and device you are using. Open an ordinary website and then your usual applications. Only after that baseline works should you add extra filters, custom DNS or split-tunneling rules.

Set automatic connection behavior to match your routine. A desktop that remains on one network has a different pattern from a phone switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data. How to check that NordVPN is actually working

Use several checks together. A changed public IP confirms something about the route of that request; it does not prove that every app, DNS request or future reconnection is covered.

1. Read the connection state: verify that the app reports an active server connection, rather than just an account login.
2. Compare the public IP: note your normal connection’s public IP, connect, then repeat the check in the browser you actually use. Keep the addresses private when sharing results.
3. Check DNS and routing: follow our VPN setup and leak-testing worksheet, especially if you use custom DNS or exclusions.
4. Rehearse a routine change: try sleep and wake, or Wi-Fi to cellular on a phone. Watch whether the intended connection returns.
5. Test your everyday tasks: load a work site, use a video call and check access to a printer if those are part of your routine.

Save the NordVPN setup checklist

Match the fix to the stage that failed. Change one setting at a time and record the result. This preserves a clear way back and gives support a useful description if you need more help.

The first checks above are our troubleshooting sequence. For provider-specific fixes, use NordVPN’s login help and its website and app access guide. If the issue only affects one site, that is a different symptom from losing all internet access. If it affects every device on one Wi-Fi network, investigate that network before reinstalling each app.

Fix a NordVPN login loop or a missing subscription

The native application can hand sign-in to your browser and then ask to return to the app. A completed browser login with a blocked return can look like an app login failure even when the password was accepted.

1. Close old Nord Account login tabs and start a fresh login from the NordVPN application.
2. Check the sign-in method and email against the account used for your purchase. Signing in with Apple or Google is only useful if it leads to the intended account.
3. Allow cookies and the required pop-up or application-opening prompt for the official account site. Check that your device’s clock is correct.
4. If the return still fails, try a different default browser and repeat the app-initiated login.
5. For repeated attempts or a 429 error, stop retrying continuously. NordVPN’s help recommends waiting at least 30 minutes before another attempt.

These actions follow the official login troubleshooting guide. If your subscription remains missing, keep the payment receipt and ask support to match it to the account. Send sensitive billing details only through the official support channel, never in a public comment or screenshot.

Updates, reinstalling and canceling: what changes?

Use the update mechanism for the distribution you installed: the app’s documented update path, the relevant app store or the supported Linux package process. Returning to the official download page is useful if an update has failed; downloading a second random installer is not.

Before reinstalling, note any server preferences, routing exceptions or custom settings you want to restore. Do not assume they survive removal. After reinstalling, sign in to the existing account and repeat the connection checks. That is particularly useful when you have changed Mac distributions or moved to a newer operating system.

Removing the app does not cancel billing

Uninstalling removes software from a device. Canceling auto-renewal changes future subscription billing. Requesting a refund is a third action. NordVPN’s cancellation instructions explain how the route depends on who bills you; store-managed subscriptions should be handled through the relevant store.

For example, deleting the iPhone app while keeping a laptop installation does not by itself stop an Apple-billed renewal. Check the subscription where it was purchased and keep the confirmation when you change renewal settings. A reinstallation is not a reason to create another paid subscription.
