Read the exception before choosing the provider
Platform support is more specific than a list of operating-system logos. Proton documents experimental macOS split tunneling with WebKit limitations, so a Safari-dependent workflow needs more attention than a “Mac supported” badge suggests. NordVPN’s Linux allowlist is not the same control as choosing individual applications. Android kill-switch behavior may rely on the operating system’s VPN settings.
A practical device checklist
- Write down the OS and version for every device, including shared televisions and routers.
- Choose the required feature. An app existing for a platform does not prove its split-tunneling or disconnect behavior.
- Open the sources beside the row and check the current release and plan requirement.
- Evaluate the installed client on your own network, including sleep, reconnect, switching Wi-Fi and intentional disconnection.
- Count simultaneous connections and compare the relevant subscription, not just the number of installations.
A router can cover devices that cannot run a native app, but the firmware must support the configuration. It also changes where routing and firewall rules are managed. Do not assume that the desktop app’s protection survives unchanged on the router.

Methodology and reuse
Each CSV row includes a provider, platform, three feature states, their caveats, source URLs and the verification date. An unverified value remains distinct from an explicit negative. Our qualitative state is not a security rating. Source changes should update the row, any affected comparison and the export together. Cite the page and observation date when discussing this dataset.
